SYNOPSIS

 

 

 The lives of over half a million families throughout the UK are touched by autistic spectrum disorders (ASDs). People with autism generally experience difficulty in three main areas:  

Social interaction 

Social communication 

Social imagination. 

 

In addition, repetitive behaviour patterns and resistance to change in routine are often characteristic. Asperger syndrome is a form of autism, and is a condition that affects the way a person communicates and relates to others. 

 

 

 

THE CHARITY 

 

 Established in 1962, The National Autistic Society (NAS) exists to champion the rights and interests of all people with autism and to ensure that they and their families receive quality services appropriate to their needs. 

 

 The NAS provides a range of autism specific services including schools and adult services, an Autism Helpline, an education advocacy service, support for families, information, books and other resources, training and conferences.  

 

It is also lobbies local, regional and national UK governments, campaigning for change and better services for people with autism, their parents and carers. The NAS has a strong and active presence in all four nations of the UK.

 

Membership of the NAS is open to all and is continually reviewed to ensure value for money in providing autism-specific, comprehensive and up-to-date benefits, in a variety of accessible media.

 

THE MAGAZINE  

 

Communication magazine is published four times a year –Spring (February), Summer (May), Autumn (August) and Winter (November). 

 

The magazine includes information about autism and Asperger syndrome, the NAS and its services and activities 

 

Communication is read by the 17,000-strong membership, mainly parents and carers of people with an autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) and people with an ASD themselves, as well as other key professionals and decision-makers in the field.
